Growing up it doesnt seem like my parents focused a lot of candy safety when we would celebrate Halloween. Than again, times were different and it didnt seem to be quite the issue that it is now. We really need to talk to our children and let them know some general candy safety guidelines.

One must is to examine all of your childrens candy when they get home. You need to explain to them that for safety reasons they are not to eat any candy as they trick or treat either. Safety needs to be the first thing on our mind.

When you examine the candy, make sure that everything is wrapped. If you find that some of the wrapping may be loose or that even a tiny corner has been opened, throw it away.

Know where your candy comes from. Only go to those homes of people you know and trust. There are still a lot of people who give out homemade items, but it is smart only to eat these when you are good friends with them.

If you start eating something and then realize the taste is a little off, spit it out quickly. Some people save candy from year to year and try using it again. You dont want to eat old candy.

It is also important that we place limits on how much candy our children eat. The worst is for them to eat too much and not feel well for the next couple days.

Let your children know that it is healthier to eat candy sparingly. Give it as gifts or only allow them to eat it every couple of days. Sugar can change behavior and sleep habits for both young and old.
