One of the first things that I recommend to my students is to eliminate their credit cards. You shouldn’t have any more than three credit cards. The reason that I recommend this is because too many open lines of credit can and will negatively effect your credit score.

Over the years I have learned that it is better to be safe than sorry. It is for that reason that I feel that I must state the obvious. It is crucial that you pay your bills on time and on a consistent basis. This will prevent new negative information from being added to your credit report. If you feel that for whatever reason you are not going to be able to make your payment on time, it is highly recommended that you contact the creditor and notify them of your situation. Chances are they will be understanding.

You should reduce the amount that you owe on each of your current credit lines. The goal here is to try to keep your balances below 35% of your total available credit limit. Anything over and above 35% will reduce your credit score.
